HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format that iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It is Apple’s version of HEIF, a standard that stores pictures compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same technology used for 4K video.
Its big advantage is size: a HEIC photo is often about half the size of a JPG of the same quality. The downside is compatibility. Many Windows PCs, older Android phones, websites, online forms and photo printing services still cannot open HEIC files.
JPG is the most widely supported image format in the world. Converting your photos to JPG makes sure they:
| Feature | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | HEVC (H.265), very efficient | JPEG, older and less efficient |
| File size at similar quality | Small (about half of JPG) | Larger |
| Compatibility | Apple devices and some recent Windows and Android devices | Practically every device, browser and app |
| Transparency and high bit depth | Supported | Not supported |
| Best for | Storing photos on your phone | Sharing, uploading, editing and printing |
To take photos as JPG instead of HEIC, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. To get JPGs when you copy photos to a computer, open Settings → Photos and set “Transfer to Mac or PC” to “Automatic”.
Windows can show HEIC photos after you install the “HEIF Image Extensions” and “HEVC Video Extensions” from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG avoids the extra installs, and the people you send the photos to won’t need them either.
macOS opens HEIC files natively. In Preview, choose File → Export and pick JPEG. For many photos at once, this converter is usually quicker.
Many recent Android phones can show HEIC photos, but apps and websites often can’t. Convert them here in your phone’s browser. There’s no app to install.

The JPG is saved at high quality (92 out of 100) by default, which looks the same as the original to the eye. Choose “Maximum” in the quality menu if you need the best possible quality.
HEIC compresses photos about twice as well as JPG, so a larger JPG is normal and means the quality was kept. Choose “Smaller file” in the quality menu if you need lighter images.
Up to 100 photos per batch, up to 50 MB each. Click “Clear” to start a new batch.
No. The converter does not copy EXIF metadata into the JPG. This also removes the GPS location, which protects your privacy when you share photos.
Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet on phones, tablets and computers. On older phones, very large photos may take a little longer.
A Live Photo is a HEIC still image plus a short video. The converter turns the still image into a JPG. Files with the .heif extension are converted the same way.
